Recruiting Emergency Physicians in San Diego: What ER Docs Want Now

After five years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, you'd think I would have had the opportunity to visit San Diego - for a combat casualty training course, a lay-over on the way to Okinawa, for something. As it turns out, my first visit to San Diego was to help recruit ER doctors.

So, thank you to the leadership at the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) for choosing such an ideal location for this year's scientific assembly. I finally understand what I've been missing, and I'm sure the other 950-plus participants would agree with the incredible venue selection.

In addition to some interesting clinical talks, great weather, and a gluttonous number of fish tacos, recruiting for MEP offered a great opportunity to hear what the world of Emergency Medicine is looking for in terms of a career. Everyone wants to get paid well and have plenty of free time (this just in…), while many want to stay in Southern California until the end of their days - and who can blame them?

But most of the emergency physicians and residents that I spoke with this week want many of the same things that drew me to MEP in the first place:

  • A group that values the autonomy of its physicians
  • A work environment that provides the clinical tools needed to succeed (Do you prefer a Mac or Glidescope?  At Shady Grove we've got both!)
  • An organization that helps its members grow professionally
  • A group that recruits only fellow EM-boarded physicians to work alongside
  • An organization that believes in the value of quality and process improvement
  • Faith that senior leadership will be right there working with you in the trenches (look! the CEO is on the weekend shift schedule)

We are fortunate as providers at MEP to work in such an environment.  I need your help in spreading the word to our fellow EM professionals.

San Diego was well worth the wait, and recruiting for MEP is a far cry from a hardship tour. To think that the International Federation for Emergency Medicine is having its conference in Dublin this year... Anyone care to join me for some CME and spread the word about MEP?
